William Stacy Honored

DAC server and friend of Detroit Rotary William Stacy was honored by Detroit Rotary for his years of volunteering at our special service projects. He has helped at Children's Safety Day, Adopt-a-Highway, and at World Medical Relief. We surprised him with a visit from his wife, lunch at the head table, a plaque and a Paul Harris Fellowship.

Mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick Speaks at Detroit Rotary

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick spoke to our Wednesday April 27 meeting and brought a theme of progress to the meeting. The Mayor spoke of the hard times the city has had in getting expenses in line with revenue. But moving forward, the city has acquired all of the riverfront land between the RenCen and Belle Isle, and is looking forward to the development to come. Also, the Mayor hopes to be the first one swinging the sledge hammer on the Madison-Lennox building across the street from the DAC. Although he is respectful of the potential historic nature of this and other sites in Detroit, he feels that enough time has elapsed that anyone who was serious about re-development of those sites would have come forward by now, and, failing that, we need to move ahead and stop waiting.

Thank you, Mr. Mayor, for bringing your message to us today!

Detroit Rotary Celebrates Rotary Centennial, February 23, 2005

Detroit Rotary celebrated the Centennial of Rotary International on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 with a terrific meeting which was well attended by over 100. Special messages from Governor Granholm, Mayor Kilpatrick and Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano were presented, and our keynote speaker was Senator Carl Levin. Two new members were pinned at our meeting that day. How special to begin one's Rotary career on the 100th Birthday of Rotary.

Detroit Rotary Family Day December 29, 2004

Detroit Rotary held its annual Family Day on the traditional date, the Wednesday between Christmas and New Year's Day. The room was packed and the families turned out in their best garb for a luncheon that included gifts for the young guests, a musical performance and a magician.

Co-chair Rich Lewinski was down for the count with unexpected surgery, and so fellow chair Mary Knauer and her Elves made the day a terrific success.

Rotary International Centennial Bell Luncheon

The Rotary Club of Detroit celebrated the 100th anniversary of Rotary International at the historic Ford Piquette Plant with the visit of the Rotary Centennial Bell.   Similar to the traveling Olympic torch, five Rotary Centennial bells are circulating to clubs in every Rotary country.   The bells' journeys will symbolize the internationality of Rotary as they crisscross the globe.

The bell in the United States is circulating to the first 100 Rotary Clubs. Detroit is club #16, and the bell will make two additional stops in Michigan, at Grand Rapids #77 and Saginaw #93.

Rotarians from all around District 6400 and District 6380 and beyond came to see the bell, and many had their photos taken with the bell! Webmaster Liz was taking souvenir photos, and raised $100 to be used toward purchasing Layettes for the Children of the Dump.

Mary Knauer named Rotarian of the Year 2004-2005

Mary Knauer was named Detroit Rotarian of the Year at our Centennial Bell Luncheon. Mary lives "Service above self" every day. As part of a school adoption program, Mary helps raise funds for school supplies for schools in Peru. But Mary doesn't just send money, she personally travels to Peru to deliver the school supplies to the children of the Amazon River Basin.

Mary joined Detroit Rotary following the death of her husband Rick, a long-time Detroit Rotarian and Past President. Not content to allow the Rotary tradition to lapse in her family, Mary picked up the baton and has been running with it ever since. We are blessed to have Mary as a member and a friend.

Rotary International Exchange Students Arrive

Two of our three 2004-2005 Rotary International Exchange Students have now arrived. Morris, from Turkey and Noon, from Thailand, visited at our meeting last Wednesday. Julia arrives from Russia on Friday. Morris and Noon exchanged banners with President Mary Anne and briefly greeted the club. Imagine making a speech in another language! Luckily Morris and Noon spoke to us in English, which is lucky as I imagine that our Turkish and Thai language skills could stand improvement!

Morris had quite an extended plane journey to arrive, and was routed through Atlanta, much to everyone's surprise!

Detroit Rotarians Tour Ford Field

On July 14, 2004 our guest speaker, Brad Harrison of the Detroit Lions organization, led us on a special VIP tour of the new Ford Field, and it was a wonderful opportunity to experience this new Detroit venue.

Our tour included the press box, luxurious suites, locker rooms, various elevators, stairways and the finale was getting to walk around on the field itself!   The new turf is amazing, it even perplexed Liz's dog Fawn!

Thanks to Speaker Chair Chris Trebilcock for this wonderful opportunity!
