Youth Citizen of the Year JaQuetta Coopwood

On Wednesday June 2, 2004, St Benedictine student JaQuetta Coopwood was selected as the Detroit Rotary Fred Rollins Memorial Youth Citizen of the Year for 2004. If JaQuetta seems familiar, it's because she was presented with her Youth Citizen of the Month award only last week, on May 26.

In addition to her excellent scholarship, JaQuetta has served her family for many years by working and contributing to the household. JaQuetta is enrolled in the Residential College at the University of Michigan and starts in Ann Arbor in the fall. From the webmaster, Go Blue!

Fireside Meeting Hosted by Mary Knauer

Mary Knauer hosted Rotarians and guests in her home on December 14, 2003 for a lovely evening. DG Roberto and Sylvia Sanchez were honored guests!

A Fireside Meeting is a great way to meet and greet Rotarians in an informal setting! The food and fellowship are always beyond compare.

If you missed this gathering, be on the lookout for future events. Rumor has is that there is a Grosse Pointe and a Birmingham location coming up!

On Wednesday, November 26, 2003 Dr. William K. Quick addressed the Detroit Rotary Club for his 29th Annual Thanksgiving message. Both a history lesson and a lesson for the heart, Bill reminds us to be grateful for each and every day. He asked if we knew the difference between an optimist and a pessimist. The pessimist sees difficulty at every opportunity. The optimist sees opportunity at every difficulty.

As you give thanks, tomorrow and every day, remember those who are gone, those who are far away, those who are ill, those you love, and those who love you.

Dr. Quick has graciously provided the text of his message today, for those who could not join us. Click on the photo at right to download the pdf file.

The Detroit Rotary Bowling League is at it again!

We’re bowling at Luxury Lanes which is on 9 Mile Road just East of Woodward on Monday nights at 5:30pm for the second year now.

If you love to bowl, this is the place where Rotary meets Bowling, and you can combine two great interests. The fun and fellowship will draw you in, and even if you “haven’t bowled since fifth grade” as many of our bowlers (including Mr. Len ‘300 game ring pin’ Smith) have claimed……you will be surprised at how quickly it comes back to you. Even if you are really thrilled to break 100, your handicap will help make you competitive against the 200+ crowd.

If you can’t commit to bowling with us every single week, consider signing on as a sub. You need to bowl for 2 consecutive weeks to establish an average, and provide your contact info to the league, and then when teams need a sub they can call you, and you can accept if you're available.

This year's season began on Sept 22, 2003 and will conclude on April 18, 2004. There are a few openings for individuals or teams of three to join the league, email Gerry Chase or call (248) 569-7770

Thanks to Mary Anne Demo for submitting this information!

The cost for individual bowlers is $320 for the season, payable in two installments of $160.00.
or
Sponsor a bowling team for $225 and support the league from afar!

Foundation Seminar Held at Schoolcraft College on October 4, 2003

PP Noel Brown and a group of NINE other Detroit Rotarians attended this seminar. Based on PP Noel's comments, it sounds like time well spent.

He writes: "This was a gathering of a wide mix (approx. 80 attendees) from most of the clubs in District 6400, from PDG's, Assistant Governors, Presidents, Foundation Chairs, and members. The opening was a combination of Larry Wright, followed by Roberto Sanchez. The main thrust of the seminar was education-which included the specific topics of:

1) The Nuts and Bolts of the Rotary Foundation (its organization, functions, makeup, $$ details, the video, etc),
2) Group Study Exchange and your Club Members (down to earth discussion of selection, makeup, qualifications, timing, etc.),
3) Scholarships Available in Your Community,
4)District Simplified Grants for your Projects (new information on how to apply, types, etc, etc.)

This was followed by a great lunch and speech by Bill Ives, challenging us all to contribute to Rotary Foundation this year and every year. The seminar was held in the newest facility at Schoolcraft which has ALL of the latest electronic gadgets, etc. and was a great venue for such a meeting. I thought that it was a very informative and interesting session, with very good participation. Awards for last year were also handed out, and I am bringing three (3) of them to Detroit for presentation on Wednesday. "

District Governor's Golf Outing 2003

A perfect day at the Kingsville Golf and Country Club on September 17, 2003...cool breeze, bright sun, no humidity. Oh, and there was golf too! Everyone enjoyed the day and the dinner that followed. The funds raised will allow DG Roberto Sanchez to help finance good projects throughout the year. Photos here.

Third "Adopt a Highway" Weekend for Detroit Rotarians and Friends

On Saturday, September 13, Detroit Rotarians were joined by students from Pershing High School, Western High School, and officers and cadets from the Detroit Police Department for the third and final "Adopt a Highway" weekend for 2003. This is our third effort this year along our assigned stretch of Eight Mile Road. By now, the area is looking very nice! The less trash there is, the less likely people are to pitch more trash! Photos here.

Detroit Rotary Childrens Safety Day

Detroit Rotarians and friends and family gathered on Belle Isle on Sunday August 24, 2003 to give away 750 bicycle helmets to children. This year, for the first time, we were partnered with WXYZ Channel 7 in conjunction with the immunization fair for children heading back to school next week. Photos here. Be patient, the photo page may take a few moments to load.

Meet the Governor's Night in Harrow, Ontario

June 24, 2003

Mark your calendars to remember this event for next year! Always a terrific evening, this year was no exception! After a cocktail hour liberally laced with "Red Pop" and sunflower seeds for snacks, we were led across the street to the K of C hall for a hearty dinner. The past, present and future District Governors were "piped" into the hall by the bagpiper, who was, per tradition, promptly paid for his services. Thus the term "Pay the Piper" DG Roberto Sanchez was welcomed and (now) PDG Bob Gallagher was heartily thanked for his service.
